Who else finds Instagram ‘would you rather’ stories addictive? We’ve created our own version today, with a sustainable fashion twist.
Fashion is a form of expression. The capitalist economy has successfully trained consumers and their psychology that this expression needs a new face everyday! Result is, we are drowning in styles and trends and seasons. This has successfully made the textile industry the third largest polluter and contributing 8-10% global carbon emissions, significantly contributing to climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Needless to say, this impact is going to increase if we don’t act now. The one liner reason is: using fossil fuel derived raw materials and rearing animals for fashion. Fibres like polyester, nylon, spandex etc. shed microplastics equivalent to 50 billion plastic bottles a year and do not degrade in landfills for hundreds of years. Every year, 5 billion animals are used only for fashion and textile production. This includes leather, fur, wool, silk, down.
Just like the food industry, the solution lies in simple resources already in abundance on our planet-plants!
While fast fashion is very easily blamed for the woes, the luxury fashion industry is no saint! However, fast fashion not only copies luxury styles but also relies on its trends and forecasts to successfully lure the consumer into buying more. Luxury fashion, despite its current emissions, does have a pedestal and a headstart. It is always linked to making higher quality products, ones that are curated and designed to last longer. Given their higher price, they also invoke the ideology of caring better for each piece. With its head start, luxury fashion has an important responsibility, to clean up for its consumers, but also to propagate the psychology of mindful consumption.
How can luxury fashion be truly plant-based, without using any greenwashing jargon, without the wordplay of x% plants or renewable resources. Being true and simple-100% plant based.
Say no to animals, no to oil based, microplastic shedding fibres.
Choose native, renewable plants. Responsibly grown cotton, linen, jute, bamboo, banana, hemp, nettle. There are many possibilities.
Recycling- textile to textile recycling might be the way to combat the garments already out in the ecosystem.
The milder devil of Viscose: Viscose is man made cellulose derived from cutting trees and making it into pulp. The pulp is then used to spin cellulosic yarns. Unless it is 100% textile to textile recycled Viscose, there is no justification to cutting forests for fabrics.
JIWYA, launched its current collection with native plants- Jute, Linen and a local variety of cotton, known as kala cotton- (kala in hindi means dark). That grows in drought prone lands with little water and no pesticides, this variety of cotton is slightly duller than conventional cotton, hence the name. The brand is ready to launch lesser known and regenerative fibres like banana, bamboo, hemp, nettle etc.
Synthetic dyes, no matter what their type, primarily come from fossil fuels and are responsible for a myriad of ailments to the workers and water bodies.
Relying on plant colours, sourced from local forest ecosystems or ones made in the lab might be the future. One has to note that plant colours include- vegetable peels, fruit peels, flowers, fruits, dry barks, and roots of small plants like turmeric.
Plant colours do not require heavy usage of chemicals and salts used in conventional dyeing and require a fraction of water used for conventional dyeing.
If no added salts or chemicals are present, leftover water from plant colour dyeing can actually be used to nourish soil or large gardens.
At JIWYA, the founder being textile scientists, have optimised recipes for plant colour dyeing using plant-based mordants and regularly feed the leftover water to their garden, conscious of the ingredients cycle. The brownie point, most of these plant dyes either come from everyday food waste (onion peels, pomegranate peels) or are generally sourced from local forest ecosystems empowering small businesses and their sustainable practices.
Saying no to synthetic finishes like repellents- stain, water, oil, wrinkle, is a big step in healthier textiles. All these functional finishes use a group of chemicals PFAS, also called forever chemicals, as they never biodegrade and pose a variety of health hazards.
JIWYA, proudly, doesn’t use any synthetic finish. Brands can rightfully take a step and denounce usage of toxic finishes and promote using the natural softness of plant fibres over the plastic-y smooth finish created by chemical coating, often a derivative of crude oil.
Glitters, sequins, beads, pearls, and all shiny-beady embellishments materials on clothing are actually-plastic. Their small size makes them the perfect avenue to shed more microplastics.
JIWYA uses scraps from their own production line to make buttons, embellishments and other colourful elements that can decorate a garment. JIWYA is zero waste in its production and utilises all production scrap to be upcycled.
Often neglected but equally important are fixtures and supplies-stitching threads, fixtures like zippers, buttons etc. They are all made of plastic. They are all small and easy sources of microplastics.
At JIWYA, buttons are sourced from local communities that use coconut shells and broken wood to make buttons. Cotton stitching thread, of various strengths is sourced with much effort to ensure no plastics. Zippers are replaced with more body friendly upcycled-strings that also adapt to slight changes in the wearer's body.
For one, brands rely on excessive labelling. Brand label, care label, size label at multiple locations, plastic loops used to put these labels, adhesive used to paste in on the garment! The list doesn’t end. While some of these are important for regulations, not all are needed. But all are made with cheap quality polyester that is often scratchy to the skin and needless to say, a landfill resident shredding microplastics.
First step is reducing unnecessary labels and second, making them in natural materials- plant fibres, recycled paper, cloth strings.
At JIWYA, brand and care labels use unbleached cotton and certified biodegradable inks. The cloth tag is recycled paper printed with certified biodegradable inks, attached with a jute string. No other labels are used.
Packaging for fashion and many other consumer products relies on plastics only. A single use plastic bag around the garment, then packed in a bigger plastic bag, bubbled wraps and then taped with single use plastic tape. All of which are then thrown away, making their way to the oceans and animals becoming a choking hazard.
Bio-compostable packaging, although coming from natural sources, doesn’t compost easily, only in industrial composters.
At JIWYA, an unbleached cotton tote bag is used to house the garment, given to the consumer to be used for portable use later. This is then packed in a bio-film certified to be home-compostable. If needed, recycled honeycomb paper is used to cushion and then packed in a corrugated paper box, sealed with paper tape. All ingredients are compostable, but also easy to reuse to store and carry things.
While brands may be starting to think about material from an environmental point of view, they still haven’t taken account of unlimited production. 92 million tonnes-that is how much textile waste is created annually! Apparel consumption around the world in 2019- 62 million metric tonne, 87% of which is incinerated or sent to landfills, less than 1% of which is recycled.
Mindful, slow consumption, designs that are timeless, lesser but meaningful pieces created to last longer-all steps that luxury fashion already likes. Just needs higher vigour.
JIWYA is a slow fashion brand that creates limited edition, made to measure and curated designs. This is to ensure the consumer gets a piece perfectly made to their measurements. At the same time, the RE:JIWYA program gives a lifetime subscription of Repair, Revamp and Reintroduction, taking responsibility for each JIWYA product through and after its lifetime.
Fast fashion and often luxury fashion too uses sweatshops and unethical labour to produce their goods.
Luxury fashion can be the torchbearer of transparency, showing the craftspeople who make their products.
At JIWYA, the website not only shows the entire supply chain but lists all artisans it works with with their name and pictures and locations. The brand sources authentic, heritage textile art, thus impacting 100s of grassroot small businesses. The final design, manufacturing, dyeing happens at the HQ, with the small team of founders and production associates, also listed in the web.
While a brand may not be able to take all steps, it has to be clear in which steps it took and avoid greenwashing! Brands are eager to introduce policies that increase their own consumption and they readily throw words like sustainability, vegan, organic without actually giving quantitative details.
At JIWYA, we are PETA certified. And we are constantly working to get on brand rating indexes to measure our impact and allow us to do even better. Saying only what they mean and use, you will not find us using the words sustainable, vegan, eco-friendly etc. The brand says 100% plant-based, zero waste and handmade. That is what it stands for!
All said and done, the above steps are not just changes, they amount for an entire shift in business model. One that puts the planet and people at centre instead of unlimited unchecked growth.

In an era where sustainability and ethical practices are at the forefront of consumer consciousness, fashion and textile certifications have become crucial for brands aiming to demonstrate their commitment to these values. With a myriad of certifications available, it can be challenging to determine which one aligns best with your brand’s ethos and goals. Here, we explore some of the most recognized certifications, and outline their key features to help you make an informed decision.
SANE is the next-gen certification for sustainable fashion products, covering environmental, workers’ rights, and consumer health aspects. SANE Standard is a multistakeholder initiative and a member of the United Nations Fashion and Lifestyle Network.
Through its standard, SANE offers a concrete definition of sustainability for fashion products, answering the new EU legal requirements as well as customer expectations regarding sustainability claims on fashion products.
SANE Standard is designed to help consumers easily identify ethically made products and support fashion brands in communicating their sustainable commitments. Its holistic approach ensures that products are not only eco-friendly but also ethically produced and safe for consumers.
SANE accepts a variety of 45 types of materials including recycled, regenerative, organic, upcycled, responsible produced.
GOTS is a comprehensive certification for organic fibers, ensuring the organic status of textiles from harvesting through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing. GOTS certification covers all stages of production, from raw material sourcing to finished products, ensuring organic integrity and sustainability.
SA8000 is a leading social certification standard for factories and organizations across the globe. Developed by Social Accountability International (SAI), it measures social performance in areas such as child labor, forced labor, health and safety, free association and collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, and remuneration. SA8000 is ideal for brands looking to ensure ethical treatment of workers throughout their supply chains.
GRS focuses on products made from recycled materials. It verifies the recycled content of products and ensures responsible social, environmental, and chemical practices in production. GRS is ideal for brands prioritizing recycling and reducing waste.
Fair Wear certification ensures fair labor practices in the garment industry. It focuses on improving workplace conditions and promoting fair wages, working hours, and health and safety standards. This certification is suitable for brands committed to social responsibility and workers' rights.
B Corps certification is for businesses that meet higher standards of social performance, accountability, and transparency. It is not specific to fashion but applies to all types of businesses committed to sustainability and social good. There are concerns about the effectiveness of impact measurement, as some believe that the certification does not always translate into substantial, tangible improvements in sustainability practices. Critics point out that some companies may use B Corps certification more as a marketing tool rather than a commitment to genuine change, diluting the certification’s value.
Sedex provides a globally recognized audit methodology to assess labor, health and safety, environment, and business ethics. Sedex audits help brands ensure ethical practices across their supply chains. SMETA is a methodology, Sedex is a membership organisation, not certifications schemes.
WRAP certification focuses on ensuring safe, lawful, humane, and ethical manufacturing worldwide. It covers a range of labor and workplace standards and is one of the largest independent certification programs in the apparel sector, however, it is far from beeing the most ambitious one, particularly when it comes to requirements for workers' pay.
BCI promotes better standards in cotton farming and practices. It aims to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, the environment it grows in, and the sector’s future. BCI is not a certification but can work for brands committed to improve slightly their cotton sourcing.
While all these certifications offer significant benefits, SANE Standard stands out by covering a comprehensive range of sustainability aspects, including environmental impact, workers' rights, and consumer health. Its holistic approach ensures that products are not only environmentally friendly but also ethically produced and safe for consumers. The look and feel of SANE are also much more in tune with the expectations of fashion consumers and will not scare them. If you seek a balanced and comprehensive certification that addresses multiple aspects of sustainability, SANE Standard could be the ideal choice.
Choosing the right certification depends on your brand’s specific sustainability goals and values. Whether you prioritize organic materials, fair labor practices, or recycled content, there is a certification to meet your needs.
Investing in credible certifications not only enhances your brand’s reputation but also contributes to a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry.
A recent study found that 69% of US consumers would pay more for sustainable products. However, when we look at the number of consumers who actively shop this way, it’s much lower, more like 15%.
So why the discrepancy between intention and action? Why do so many shoppers express an interest in sustainable products, yet they aren’t voting that way with their wallets?
Finally, if the majority support sustainable shopping, why isn’t sustainable fashion mainstream? Let’s dive in.
If you talk to conscious consumers (we did), you’ll find that several things stop them from a sustainable choice, or at the very least, make that choice too difficult. First, of course, is sifting through all of the noise to figure out which brands are actually, truly sustainable.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there. Even if you know which brands are sustainable, you still need to find brands among those that match your style, size, and ship to your country, for example.
In short, even if you can cut through all the greenwashing, it’s still a lot of work.
Many solutions exist to help shoppers find the most sustainable brands, including Eco-Stylist. But when it comes to helping shoppers find ethical brands that match their personal style, there is virtually nothing.
Imagine if shopping for sustainable clothing were easy. Imagine if it didn’t involve all of this work.
At Eco-Stylist we’ve envisioned a service that gives you personal shopping recommendations based on your style, size, and location. All of course, from certified sustainable fashion brands.
We’ve taken out all of the work from the process to make shopping sustainable clothing easier than ever before. All in an effort to make the sustainable choice as fun and joyful as possible, improving your style in the process.
All you have to do is complete a short style quiz. We then build your style profile and deliver personalized shopping recommendations to you via email.
You can select a one time personal shopping fix or subscribe for quarterly or monthly recommendations. With any subscription we save your style profile, so getting results you love becomes effortless and something you can look forward to on a regular basis.

To make sustainable fashion the norm we have to address all of the problems holding people back from making the better choice. One of those challenges today is just how difficult it is to shop for sustainable clothing.
By making shopping sustainably easy, fun, and a better experience, we can help turn the tide on fast fashion. And little by little, we can make sustainable fashion the norm.
In Bangladesh, textile workers are on the streets, demanding fair wages. The movement is repressed with force, and several demonstrators have already been killed, with thousands facing prosecution.
The fashion industry's salaries, already low, have become absurd due to inflation, erasing the hard-won gains from past union fights, and workers face the never-ending task of renegotiating their rights.
A slight pay increase takes years of tough negotiations, but inflation can erase it overnight. This isn't just Bangladesh's issue; it's a global problem.
The current minimum wage for garment workers in Bangladesh is 8,000 TK.
Trade unions are calling for at least 23,000 TK.
From the outside, it might seem like an unreasonably large increase: - how can people ask for 3 times their salary?
To understand what this means, we need to think about what a fair and decent wage would be. The Living Wage calculation based on the Anker methodology is an internationally recognized benchmark for defining a decent wage. The living wage is calculated locally based on the price of basic needs (food, housing, transport, healthcare, etc.). Earning a living wage isn't a luxury; it covers just the minimum a family needs to avoid choosing between feeding the family, sending the children to school, taking the bus, or paying for medication for a family member.
Depending on the organization doing the calculation, the current living wage in Bangladesh is between 33,368 TK (Bangladesh Institute for Labour Studies) and 51,000 TK (Asia Floor Wage Alliance).
Even taking the lowest calculation, the conclusion is absolutely insane: workers currently earn 1/4 of a living wage! Can you imagine the kind of choices they have to make in their daily lives?
How can we call this anything other than modern slavery? Some will say that no one is forcing them to work in these factories, which makes the difference with past slavery, but what other choice do they have?
Who is responsible? Who's to blame?
The answer is not so simple.
The factory owners? They would reply that they are complying with the law and that if they raise wages, they will no longer be competitive, will lose their customers, and the workers will lose their jobs.
The Bangladeshi government? It would say that if it raised the minimum wage, the country would no longer be attractive to international brands, and brands would move to the next cheaper country, as they always do. Millions of people would lose their jobs in Bangladesh.
The Fashion brands?
Some now say they will "agree to pay higher prices for clothes Made-in-Bangladesh to help the factories compensate for wage increases." This is a rather hypocritical statement: if brands want to produce in a country where workers are better paid, why did they choose Bangladesh in the first place? Low wages and abundant labor are Bangladesh's main competitive advantage. This isn't the first time we've seen evidence that Bangladeshi workers are being exploited. There have been tragic incidents, such as the collapse of the Rana Plaza, and others and workers regularly go on strike to demand better conditions. Knowing this, they could have chosen to produce under more decent conditions. But they didn't. Why? They would say that if they leave Bangladesh, the situation would be worse for the workers as they would lose their jobs.
They would also say that if they do not produce at such low costs and do not offer cheap products, they are not competitive, consumers won't buy, and they will go bankrupt.
The consumers? They would say that they, too, are struggling financially, that their children are growing up fast and constantly need new shoes and clothes, that they can't afford to pay more, and that they don't have the time to look at where the clothes were made and anyway everything is made in Asia in similarly poor conditions.
The governments of the importing countries? They would answer that if they raise import barriers on Bangladeshi products, many people will lose their jobs in Bangladesh, that it will be unpopular with their electorate if they have to pay more for their clothes, and that they are under much pressure from the industry to favor their business (they probably wouldn't say it though).
Who else could be blamed?
The system? This is undoubtedly a systemic problem. It may not be clear who is to blame, but it is very clear who is paying the consequences, working hard every day, and not even being able to feed their families properly.
The current strike will probably lead to a slight increase in the minimum wage. Today, the Bangladeshi government proposed raising the minimum wage to 12,500 TK. That's still a long way from a living wage!
Of course, we have to think about the future generation and take care of the environment, but what sense does that make if we can't take care of the current generation?
In recent years, sustainability has taken center stage, and people are seeking eco-friendly alternatives in all aspects of life. This includes even the most personal routines like menstrual care and other hygiene essentials.
While menstrual care was once associated with disposable products, it has seen a transformation with the discovery of reusable period underwear. This underwear is designed for maximum absorbency and protection and can be a game changer in ensuring menstrual hygiene.
Below in this article, we will go deep into the top eight benefits that make reusable period underwear a must-have product for every woman.
This is probably the most prominent and immediate advantage of reusable underwear. Traditional disposable menstrual products contribute significantly to landfill waste and can take hundreds of years to decompose fully, as they contain plastics as one of the main components.
You can alleviate this concern by introducing reusable period underwear to your routine. It will substantially prevent hundreds of pounds of waste from accumulating, thereby minimizing your carbon footprint and embracing a more sustainable lifestyle.
It is true that the upfront cost of purchasing reusable period underwear may appear higher than that of disposable products, but if you focus on the long-term savings this choice entails, it will feel like a good investment.
Unlike disposable counterparts that necessitate continuous repurchasing, reusable underwear is designed to last for years when properly cared for. This means it’s a cost-effective choice because a single investment can potentially replace years' worth of disposable products. This aspect makes it a sound financial decision while contributing to a more environmentally sound future.
Disposable menstrual products, such as period pads and tampons, are often constructed from synthetic materials and infused with chemicals. These materials can lead to discomfort, irritation, and allergic reactions.
In contrast, reusable period underwear is thoughtfully crafted from gentle, breathable, and eco-friendly fabrics such as organic cotton, ensuring optimal comfort and minimizing the risk of skin-related issues. The improved breathability offered by these fabrics promotes better airflow, contributing to a more comfortable and irritation-free experience during menstruation.
No matter what your body type is or what size you fit comfortably in, reusable period underwear is available in a variety of options. This level of adaptability is a testament to its innovation. You can opt from a range of absorbencies, accommodating various flow levels from light to heavy.
Some brands even offer adjustable absorbency options, empowering individuals to tailor their protection based on their unique needs. This versatility negates the necessity of purchasing different products for different phases of your cycle, streamlining the menstrual care routine and enhancing convenience.
One of the foremost worries associated with menstruation is the potential for leakage. Many disposable period pads and tampons get leaked during usage, which makes them somewhat unreliable.
Reusable period underwear, on the other hand, addresses this concern comprehensively, utilizing advanced technology and strategically placed absorbent layers. These layers work harmoniously to securely trap menstrual fluid.
This will mitigate the risk of leaks and provide you with the confidence to engage in diverse activities without the fear of embarrassing accidents.
As mentioned above, disposable menstrual products contain a lot of chemicals, fragrances, and dyes that can disrupt the body's natural pH balance and cause discomfort. Also, they are made of plastics, which can contribute to direct exposure to harmful chemicals.
In contrast, reusable period underwear minimizes chemical exposure, fostering better vaginal health and overall well-being. By eliminating contact with potentially harmful substances, these undergarments contribute to a more balanced and comfortable menstrual experience.
This enables you to mitigate the most important concerns regarding menstrual hygiene and maintain a healthy body.
Gone are the days when menstrual products were synonymous with bulkiness, irritation, and unsightliness. Now, you can forget about all these products and start your new menstrual journey with reusable period underwear.
These types of underwear offer a diverse range of styles, colors, and designs that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. This blend of form and function empowers women to embrace their menstrual cycle confidently, thereby ignoring and overcoming the societal stigma that has often been associated with this natural process.
Beyond its benefits from a practical and hygienic perspective, choosing reusable period underwear fosters a sense of empowerment and body positivity. By making an informed and conscious decision to opt for a sustainable solution, women actively participate in their well-being and contribute to the health of the planet.
The comfort, flexibility, and assurance provided by these undergarments positively influence the way people perceive and connect with their bodies during menstruation, promoting a more uplifting and affirming menstrual experience.
All in all, reusable period underwear can contribute so much to your personal hygiene and confidence, so investing in them can be a good decision on your part.
In an era characterized by environmental concerns and shifting consumer attitudes, the choices we make as consumers hold the power to shape a more sustainable future. Women, who are often at the forefront of change, have a unique opportunity to drive positive impact through their purchasing decisions. Embracing products that follow sustainable practices goes beyond a mere trend; it signifies a conscious commitment to the planet, society, and future generations.
Being aware of the environment and playing your part in a better future is wholesome. Adopting a sustainable lifestyle can bring positive change within yourself and your surroundings. Here are the top reasons why women should prefer sustainable brands.
Sustainability, in its essence, embodies the harmony between environmental, social, and economic considerations. Sustainable products are designed, produced, and distributed to minimize negative impacts on the environment while promoting social equity and economic viability.
By opting for products that follow sustainable practices, women can actively contribute to the preservation of ecosystems, the reduction of carbon footprints, and the support of ethical working conditions.
Preferring fashion brands and other brands that produce products using green technology and sustainable practices can bring a lot of positive change in one's life. Every woman should play her part in environmental protection. Here are the top reasons why following brands with sustainable policies is a good choice.
Choosing sustainable products directly contributes to environmental preservation. Sustainable practices involve reduced resource consumption, decreased pollution levels, and responsible waste management. Women who prioritize eco-friendly products help reduce the strain on natural resources, protect biodiversity, and combat climate change.
From clothing made from organic fabrics to cosmetics free from harmful chemicals, each sustainable choice made aligns with safeguarding the delicate balance of the planet.
Sustainable products often extend beyond ecological considerations to encompass ethical labor practices. Many sustainable brands adhere to fair trade standards, ensuring that workers are treated fairly and provided safe working conditions. By supporting such brands, women amplify the message that exploitation and unjust working conditions are not acceptable.
This empowerment extends to women workers in the supply chain, making sustainable choices a catalyst for gender equality and social justice.
Sustainable products frequently prioritize natural and non-toxic materials, which can have a direct impact on individual health and well-being. Women who opt for clean beauty products, organic foods, and eco-friendly personal care items are making choices that minimize exposure to harmful chemicals.
Purchasing makeup and skincare products from brands that use sustainable cosmetic packaging promotes not only personal health but also a culture of wellness and self-care.
The concept of a circular economy revolves around reducing waste by extending the lifecycle of products through recycling, repurposing, and upcycling. Women who invest in sustainable products contribute to the growth of a circular economy.
They prioritize products that are designed for longevity, durability, and eventual reusability. By doing so, they help alleviate the strain on landfills, conserve resources, and pave the way for a more sustainable consumption pattern. Some brands often provide refilling options that are more sustainable options when it comes to reducing plastic waste.
Sustainable products often emerge from innovative brands that are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of responsible production. These brands strive to find creative solutions to complex challenges, such as reducing carbon emissions, eliminating waste, and promoting regenerative agriculture.
By choosing sustainable products, women contribute to the growth and success of these pioneering brands, creating a demand for innovation that drives the entire industry forward. When such brands are promoted enthusiastically, they push other brands to follow the lead, therefore incorporating sustainable practices in the market.
Women have a profound influence on families, communities, and social circles. By advocating for and adopting sustainable products, they become powerful educators and influencers.
Through conversations, sharing experiences, and leading by example, women can spark conversations about the importance of sustainability, inspiring others to make conscious choices for a better future. More people are likely to follow someone by seeing them practice their words instead of just giving a long speech.
The choice to embrace sustainable products is not just about the present—it's an investment in a better world for generations to come. Women who prioritize sustainability are not merely consumers; they are ambassadors of change, catalysts for innovation, and guardians of the environment. By choosing products that align with their values, women empower themselves to actively participate in shaping a future that is compassionate, just, and environmentally conscious. Every purchase becomes a vote for a more sustainable, equitable, and harmonious world, leaving a legacy of responsibility and hope for the generations that follow.
WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF XANTHE ANNA WHAT REVEALS YOUR BRAND CONCEPT?
I make beautiful sheepskin boots and slippers using ecological and reprocessed materials for people who love both comfort and style. I launched Xanthe Anna in 2021; Xanthe is my first name, and Anna my middle name. It felt honest to use my own name for the business, as what I do is so personal. I make all the sheepskin boots and slippers myself in my small workshop in Wales, UK. Each pair has my undivided attention from start to finish.
WHAT DOES THE WORD “SUSTAINABILITY” MEAN TO YOU, AND HOW DO SUSTAINABILITY ISSUES IMPACT YOU AS A BRAND?
True sustainability means producing or consuming without any environmental harm. It’s very difficult to achieve. I’m concerned that the word is often misused to sell products and cannot be trusted. I use the word sustainable sparingly, which is a challenge to the brand. Without it, communicating succinctly what I offer can be hard.
WHAT IS YOUR STRONGEST COMMITMENT IN TERMS OF SUSTAINABILITY IN YOUR BUSINESS? WHAT COULD YOU DO BETTER?
Considering the environmental impact of my boots and slippers, I’ve chosen materials with care using only ethically sourced sheepskin, veg-tanned leather, 100% recycled thread, organic hemp binding, and 60% recycled soles.
Paying attention to the quality of design and construction, all our boots come with removable and replaceable insoles. It is the first part to wear out, and I want to help my customers extend the life of their boots. New inner soles give you the super cozy new boots feeling again.
I’m really proud to offer a repair service on all my products. As a fan of slow-fashion I believe in making shoes that are loved and mended over and again.
I do have perfectionist tendencies, and there’s always something I could do better. I will continue to improve the materials I use with ultimate aim of designing closed-loop products.
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN OBJECTIVES FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS?
I’ve created a great range of beautiful products that I’m really proud of. My main goal is to steadily grow the business and meet new customers. I’m looking forward to building brand awareness, promoting Xanthe Anna, and creating a pop-up shop. I love connecting with people and talking about what they like, what they want, and making something they really love.
WHAT IS THE PRODUCT THAT BEST REPRESENTS AND DEFINES XANTHE ANNA? AND WHY?
I offer a unique custom-made service. It’s a personal process and it feels special when the boots are made just for you. When you order custom-made sheepskins boots you choose the colours, the height of the boots, and the type of sole. I aim to make boots that will be loved and worn for many years. When people have an emotional connection with their clothes, when they love their clothes, there is no place for the disposable fashion industry.
Environmental concerns are growing day by day, and in all this fuss, the need for change and leading a sustainable lifestyle is more pressing than ever. Living sustainably simply means you live in a way that doesn’t harm your surrounding environment or cause the lowest possible impact.
However, remember that all of it goes beyond simply recycling or using energy-efficient appliances; it is a mindset and a commitment to making conscious choices that have a positive impact on the planet, society, and ourselves.
To make you realize the exclusive advantages of sustainable living, we have compiled this simple guide. So, keep reading to find out some of these life changing advantages.
You know we have been witnessing the alarming consequences of climate change and the depletion of natural resources. In these situations, it becomes increasingly clear that we must take action to protect our planet and ultimately save the lives of future generations.
By embracing sustainable practices, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and minimize our impact on the environment. Conserving energy through efficient technologies, adopting renewable energy sources, and practicing mindful consumption can all contribute to lesser greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.
Additionally, when you reduce water consumption, recycle, and properly dispose of waste, you are actually helping to preserve your precious natural resources and prevent pollution in the environment. In short, every sustainable action you take adds to something significant for the betterment of the environment.
Embracing sustainable practices allows us to be mindful of our resource consumption, which eventually leads to financial empowerment and a more secure future. By following some basic sustainable living ideas, like turning off lights when not in use or utilizing energy-efficient appliances, you can reduce your utility bills significantly.
Other changes like adjusting the thermostat, insulating your homes, and embracing natural lighting can make a remarkable difference in your energy expenses in the long run. Moreover, there are sustainable transportation options, too, such as walking, cycling, or using public transit.
These options not only reduce our carbon footprint but also saves us money on fuel, parking, and vehicle maintenance.
For those of you who don’t know, sustainable living often promotes healthier lifestyles. For example, when you are adopting a plant-based or vegetarian diet, you are actually reducing the environmental impact of meat production, which can lead to better personal health outcomes.
Eating organic and locally sourced food can enhance the nutritional value of your diet. Sustainable transportation options like walking, cycling, or using public transit can contribute to a more active lifestyle, reducing sedentary behavior and associated health risks.
When you are prioritizing sustainability, you actually shift your focus from material possessions to experiences, connections, and overall well-being. This ultimately encourages you to reconnect with nature and spend more time outdoors.
Whether it's hiking through lush forests, gardening in our backyard, or simply enjoying a picnic in the park, immersing ourselves in the natural world enhances our physical and mental well-being. Studies have shown that spending time in nature reduces stress, boosts mood, and increases overall happiness.
Moreover, sustainable living promotes mindfulness and intentional living. This mindfulness allows us to appreciate the little things, find joy in simplicity, and cultivate gratitude for what we have.
As a responsible human being of the planet, it is crucial that you minimize our impact on the Earth's finite resources. When you adopt sustainable practices such as recycling, reusing, and reducing waste, you actively contribute to the conservation of resources.
Recycling paper, plastic, and metal helps to reduce the need for raw material extraction and manufacturing processes that consume energy and deplete natural resources.
Also, opting for reusable items, such as water bottles and shopping bags, reduces the demand for single-use products and minimizes waste generation. You are also preserving natural resources by choosing energy-efficient appliances and practicing energy conservation.
